I want to post something but my phone screen won't let me to 馃槓 I'm probably just gonna cargo-cult my thumbs Libre software is about the commons, about socializing the means of computation. "Commons" is just a modern term for "socialism" and I'm all for it, but sometimes we lose sight of our enemy: capitalism. Socialism appears to me as nothing but the idea that water, crops, means of production, culture should be common goods. Capitalists have always opposed to it of course and that's even how you spot them. GNU isn't just a C library or a set of coreutils: as someone wrote on Gemini, it's also the idea that users should own their computers and the underlying components, including their operating systems. A naive approach to commons/socialism would be to think that they'd only be about lowering costs; socialized goods must be protected from capitalists, so privatization costs must be raised. This is, I realize, a literal struggle; painless, victimless, that we're going to win, but which involves the use of force, i.e. (for libre software) the GNU GPL license instead of so-called permissive ones. To ensure our devices remain ours i.e. that we, not transnational firms like Google, own the processes and computations on our devices, these costs are raised through cryptography. ChatControl, of course, isn't about protecting children; they're just a speechless token to attack encryption and libre software. But how? First I'll mention Hanlon's razor: the political aspects of a problem need political solutions. It's the same thing with their social aspects. Their medical aspects. Their technical aspects. And Ursula von der Leyen is anything but stupid enough to reduct pedocrime to a technical problem. For example, there's a prison in Corsica for pedocriminals with no doors; criminals follow psychotherapy and there was, at the time I was taught about it, a 0% rate of recidive. Apparently we know how to cure pedocriminals and any politics to prevent pedocrime would start with social and psychological research to prevent this from happening. Case in point: Ursula von der Leyen doesn't care about your children. Furthermore, the only way in which technology does facilitate child rape is the absence of uBlock Origin in the Tor browser, whose anonymity network and protocol are used to avoid prosecution. (I'm growing tired of this libertarian "not a cryptography problem, therefore not mine" argument. Freenet, please at least remove your uncensored index from the start screen.) What's at stake with ChatControl is of course the privatization of our computers. First it will be used to report CSAM. Then torrents downloaders will be compelled to report pirated music and movies to State agencies, making any surveillance-based prosecution system more efficient. And many State-to-capitalists pipelines will be built to find LGBTQIA+ people, because Universal doesn't care about them, and also undocumented refugees, people with uteruses having to carry abortions, sex workers and their clients, dissents, journalists, and so on. Case in point: Ursula von der Leyen is a capitalist. We need encryption like we will still need locks on our doors in a communist society. And I'll argue they won't be debated because this will be a communist society, where the means of production of private property will be socialized, making it appear as a natural right the way water does.

  1. I can't reply to this post in my home TL (but I can in the local TL)
  2. Of course, it was meant to have line breaks, not just to be an aggressive block of text.
