One of them is a federation of local family digital services coops, providing various low-cost services (email, XMPP, RSS reader, PeerTube, Mobilizon…) that don't cross people's boundaries. The goal is essentially to (1) foster conversation among parents, (2) give children and teenagers services that let them do what they feel comfortable doing.
On capitalistic social media, people are manipulated into crossing their own bounndaries by exposing their feelings, vulnerabilities, and attempts to love each other to judgment. It's jackal; industrial, mass jackal, plain and simple.
Crude description of the effects of Twitter on its users
In other words, Twitter users are looking for non-judgmental listening at first, in an attempt to decrease their need to be violent, and progressively give up and realize that becoming complicit of the corp executives and investors by judging other people's feelings is more efficient, while losing sight, over months and years, of their initial goal.
They aren't contained in cells but in days, all starting to look the same.
Anyway, let's work with this industrial memory NPO and see what happens. (But I have tons of tech-related coop ideas.)

@bonfire @ivan Honestly a social network where most posts are edited in the XMPP way (last post only) or redacted does seem pretty cool. (It also implies that people won't desperately post to get their dopamine shot.) (We're nailing it, most credits go to Mayel and you of course, but thank you for letting us be part of it.)
@bonfire @ivan Because for various reasons – because we aren't in a downwards spiral where attention is scarce so/because we would fear reaching out for each other – this does feel as microblog, a comfortable spot between sharing cognitive resources – as a blogger – and looking up for your followers, like we do with our loved ones and this is even what Facebook was meant for, at first. Facebook and Twitter aren't social, as a sociology student I promise you that capitalism is an anthropological aberration, pioneers in my discipline have made the demonstration trivial, but in a social setting we share cognitive resources because we care for each other and Bonfire is the only online place where I can do this, where I can bond with my readers. (I'm glad my former blog had 200 readers, but I didn't know who they were.)

@vera @ivan No they don't. Manipulation implies twisting someone's culture, and you don't opt in to culture. This is why Twitter users need transition platforms before enjoying the slow net; this is why the slow food movement raises the concerns of culture and privilege. You don't consent to need being overstimulated, to feel anxious when you aren't. I don't want Bonfire to contribute to it; there's PeerTube already for so-called rich media.
Anyway, saying that someone would consent to be manipulated is meh. No hard feelings, but I don't want to start an argument, this isn't constructive atm.
Feature request: being able to redact, not delete, arbitrary posts (according to the post boundary) to preserve the tree structure @BonfireBuilders #bonfire_feedback +bonfire

"Dark patterns", but with an actual meaning. Manipulation is manipulation. A lie is a lie.
A manipulation victim doesn't opt in to be manipulated.

we plan to add a configuration to switch between infinite scroll and load more button.
(Infinite scrolling is often considered a dark pattern, so it would be good to offer it as a conscious choice...)
