Doug, that seems super interesting and very well aligned indeed.
Your mention of language barriers also makes me trigger another small limitation on other microblogging services that Bonfire could make better: the ability to express the language used, per post.
Many people (me included) uses 2 or more languages.
- If the language setting is in the configuration, there is only one.
- But if it can be set by post, I can express when I'm posting in Spanish and when in English, so people can filter those.

That's a really good point, @EduMerco. It would be even better if, as well as providing benefits to others* it was also of value to you as well.
I'm sadly monolingual, but I wonder if you can think of things that would be useful in the composer interface that would benefit the person crafting the message?
* i.e. people can filter by language on their timeline
Use case for circles and boundaries?
I have been trying to understand Flexible boundaries playground.bonfire.cafe/post... because it seems to be the most visible feature related to Circles in current discussions here.
But I might be more interested in Circles. Any direct doc focused on Circles?
Here's what I want to do:
A group of Bonfire users decide they want to create a new organization of some kind. They select one or more of their group to be the coordinators to form the new organization, and they post invitations to wannbe participants in the new org.
A wannabe participant sends a request with their identity to one of the coordinators. The coordinator then either adds the wannabe participant to the Circle and informs the participant of their new Circle membership, or sends the wannabe participant a link (which could be an capability) whereby they can add themselves.
From there, the participants use the Circle as a virtual group environment to decide what to do in their new group.
Does that seem like it might work? Is it something you had in mind for Circles?
I don't speak on behalf of @BonfireBuilders but I was talking to Ivan about the new design system, and defining circles as part of what he's currently calling 'spaces'.
This sounds like what you might be talking about with a 'virtual group environment' @bhaugen?

@BonfireBuilders I had a conversation with a global network organisation today which has local hubs. The problems the project lead described could definitely be solved by Bonfire:
- Difficulty in number and membership of groups
- Confusion as to who is allowed to do what within groups
- Multitude of different platforms, some for staff, some for members, some public
- Different hubs using different tech
- Language barriers between networks
We're doing user research for this client and, without sharing any sensitive data, I kind of also see it as research for Bonfire 🙌

We've started working on #coordination app - a simple task tracker extension.

Our initial design system is on penpot (anyone with a penpot account can comment on it 😊 )
It is not a fully fledged design system yet, we started from the main views and layouts, thinking in particular at how to handle multiple extensions together (eg. social and topics) and including a dashboard to summarize the user digital presence.
It's also a step toward co-designing bonfire in a more partecipatory way - as new features or UX/UI improvements will be first announced over our design system to gather feedbacks, before being implemented.

Oh, OK. Perhaps a shortcut to that from the 'edit' button the Circles modal accessible from the compose area might be worth experimenting with. One to add to user research sessions? 🙂

I'd love to talk with you about that too, we're now refactoring the topic UX and plan to work on boundaries UX as well shortly after, so it's a perfect timing to brainstorm together!

Very cool, but also I still think that button is irrelevant and (no matter which compose option you choose) the circles/boundaries option still comes before the post 😉
The deletion confirmation modal says "The circle will be permanently deleted. This action may affect all the activities that included this circle."
I guess we could explain what happens (things shared with local users in that circle won't be anymore, but things shared with remote users may still be).

I have a suggestion for Bonfire: clicking the + button next to a circle/boundary doesn't give you any feedback, but rather just takes you back to wherever you were previously.
People may not notice that the circle/boundary has been added to the list (e.g. next to 'Public')
IMHO clicking on the + button next to a circle/boundary should change the + to a - (and perhaps the colour as well) and not get rid of the modal. This is because people may wish to send a post to more than one circle/boundary.
It may also be worth considering automatically deselecting the 'Public' circle/boundary when a person selects a different circle/boundary. This is to avoid unexpected behaviour (i.e. accidentally posting something publicly)

I have a suggestion for Bonfire: my opinion is that the top-left compose space is too busy and overwhelming.
Questions (rather than solutions) - especially for @ivan
- Does the 'Create' button (compose a post / create a topic) need to even exist? The reason I ask is that it might be conceptually easier to add topics after posts/threads exist rather than beforehand.
- Would it be better to move the circles/boundaries indicator (by default 'Public') below the post creation box? In terms of workflow, at least for me I want to know what it is I'm saying before deciding which audience it's for...
In general, and I'd love to talk with you more about this, I think people are going to get quite confused about the difference between (a) posts within topics, and (b) circles/boundaries.
